How it works
Why "dR/dN"?
It's shorthand borrowed from mathematics. R is your revenue. N is the number of people in your room. dR/dN asks one question: if one more person walks in, how much more money do you make?
When the room is half empty, the answer is a lot — every new face is a new order. When the room is packed, the answer can be zero, or less than zero: the queue grows, service slows, and the next person in costs you more than they spend.
Somewhere between those two is the headcount where the answer crosses zero. That's your best room, and finding it is the only thing this site does. We put the question in the name.
